Relive the story of John Henry racing against a steam drill in this new setting of the American folk song . An expressive opening gives way to whistles of steam and the pounding hammer. All wind instruments encounter important melodic lines and the percussion section provides exciting colors including brake drum and towing chain. A final, powerful statement brings the work (and race) to an exciting conclusion.
